Why TPM maintenance for VSP E and VSP 5000

VSP E and VSP 5000 are current NVMe platforms — the TPM pitch is less EOSL-driven, more economic. Hitachi Vantara Support for tier-1 NVMe storage sits at the upper market segment; especially with VSP 5000 multi-controller configurations, six-figure maintenance contracts quickly become normal. TPM reduces this to 40 to 50 percent of Hitachi level without limiting functionality.

We service both families with OEM NVMe SSDs of all sizes, controller boards and cache modules. VSP firmware (SVOS RF on E, SVOS GX on 5000) continues without licensing — Universal Replicator, TrueCopy, ShadowImage, Dynamic Provisioning stay active. Code updates to newer microcode versions require Hitachi contract, usually uncritical with stable configurations.

What does TPM cost for VSP 5000 compared to Hitachi Vantara?
30 to 60 percent savings. A VSP 5500H with 4 controllers and 24×7×4 typically costs 80,000 to 120,000 EUR/year with Hitachi Vantara — 35,000 to 55,000 EUR with TechCare. VSP E990 smaller in absolute terms, same spread (12,000-18,000 EUR Hitachi vs. 5,000-8,000 EUR TechCare).
Can you get NVMe SSDs for VSP E and 5000?
Yes. NVMe SSDs of all Hitachi generations are stocked — 1.92 TB, 3.84 TB, 7.68 TB and 15.36 TB. Hitachi-specific custom NVMe modules with Hitachi firmware as well. VSP 5000 components are smaller in volume, so for very large configurations we check inventory coverage individually.
What's the difference between VSP E and VSP 5000 from a maintenance perspective?
VSP E is 2-controller midrange (SVOS RF), VSP 5000 is multi-controller high-end (SVOS GX) with scale-out architecture. From a maintenance perspective: same NVMe SSD pipeline, but different controller and cache modules. If you have both in the data center, we cover that in one multi-generation contract.
Does SVOS RF / SVOS GX continue to work without a Hitachi contract?
Yes. SVOS (Storage Virtualization OS) is part of the VSP firmware and continues to work without licensing — all replication, snapshot, provisioning and compression features stay active. Code updates to newer SVOS versions require an active Hitachi contract.
Which SLA levels for NVMe storage?
VSP E and VSP 5000 are tier-1 storage — we recommend 24×7×4 with German-speaking onsite engineer. With VSP 5000 multi-controller configurations, redundancy is high; single controller failures are tolerable — 5×9 NBD remains an economical option for secondary sites.
What about Hitachi Ops Center and Lumada?
Hitachi Ops Center (central multi-system management, successor to Command Suite) requires an active Hitachi contract in most editions. Customers using Ops Center centrally should keep the software subscription separately. Lumada Analytics is separate and not affected by hardware maintenance.
