HUAWEI OCEANSTOR · TPM AFTER HUAWEI PREMIER SUPPORT

Huawei OceanStor Maintenance — vendor-independent service for Dorado, mid-range and high-end storage

We service Huawei OceanStor storage platforms vendor-independent — current Dorado V6 all-flash (3000/5000/6000/18000), older Dorado V3, hybrid mid-range OceanStor 5300/5500/5600/6800 (V3 and V5), high-end hybrid 18000 series including EOSL generations 18500 V3 and 18800 V3, plus OceanProtect backup appliance. With OEM components from our own warehouse and certified refurbishing sources, SLA up to 24×7×4 with German-speaking onsite engineer and guaranteed 4-hour response time. Huawei Premier Support for OceanStor is above-average expensive in the European market — TPM reduces this to 30 to 60 percent, up to 70 percent on EOSL models.

Which OceanStor models we service

OceanStor is Huawei's enterprise storage platform, in the European market common with banks, telecommunications providers and large research data centers. Generations often coexist over long periods — Dorado V3 fleets from 2018+ frequently run alongside Dorado V6 new purchases, plus still-productive 18000 V3 platforms from 2014–2016 with tier-1 workloads. We service all generations uniformly.

Why TPM maintenance for Huawei OceanStor

OceanStor is purchased in the European market for tier-1 workloads — banking databases, telecommunications billing platforms, research HPC storage. These fleets often run productively for 8–10 years because refresh would be a multi-million-euro project with elaborate data migration. At the same time, Huawei Premier Support for high-end storage is above-average expensive and increasingly less present in the western market since 2019. For EOSL generations like OceanStor 18500 V3 and 18800 V3, Huawei often no longer renews at all — TPM is the only maintenance option on the market there. This exact tension between still-productive hardware and difficult OEM renewal makes TPM economically particularly attractive for OceanStor.

We service OceanStor with OEM components from our own warehouse and certified refurbishing sources — controller modules, disks (FC/SAS/NVMe SSD and HDD), cache modules, power supplies and backplanes for all current and EOSL generations. Our engineers are familiar with OceanStor architecture and Huawei DeviceManager. For critical storage workloads we offer 24×7×4 with guaranteed response time, for secondary storage pools or backup workloads 5×9 NBD or parts only. Mixed operation per system is possible — you define the SLA level per storage platform, we consolidate in an SLA matrix with your server and networking fleets.

Generations timeline & TPM coverage

Per hardware generation: vendor phase (slate) and TechCare coverage window (teal) up to ~5 years post-OEM EOSL.

Generation status of OceanStor line

OceanStor generations follow a 7–10 year lifecycle with long parallel coexistence of V3/V5/V6. Factory warranty typically 3 years, then Huawei Premier Support or TPM. The 18000 V3 generation from 2014–2016 has reached EOSL and is no longer renewable from Huawei — TPM is often the only option here for the still-productive tier-1 workloads.

FAQ on OceanStor maintenance

Which OceanStor models do you service?
Complete OceanStor range: current all-flash generation Dorado V6 (3000 V6, 5000 V6, 6000 V6, 18000 V6) and older Dorado V3, hybrid mid-range OceanStor 5300/5500/5600/6800 (V3 and V5), high-end hybrid 18000 series including older EOSL models 18500 V3 and 18800 V3, plus OceanProtect backup appliance for dedicated backup workloads. SAN and NAS configurations are equally covered — file and block services, snapshots, replication and deduplication features remain functional under TPM.
What does TPM cost for OceanStor compared to Huawei Premier Support?
30 to 60 percent savings vs. Huawei Premier Support, up to 70 percent on EOSL models like OceanStor 18500/18800 V3. Specific examples: Dorado 5000 V6 mid-class all-flash with 24×7×4 typically 8,000-12,000 EUR/year with Huawei, 3,500-5,500 EUR with TechCare. Dorado 18000 V6 high-end 18,000-28,000 EUR Huawei, 7,500-13,000 EUR TechCare. OceanStor 5500 V5 hybrid mid-range 6,000-9,000 EUR Huawei, 2,500-4,000 EUR TechCare. OceanProtect backup appliance 8,000-14,000 EUR Huawei, 3,500-6,500 EUR TechCare. For 18500/18800 V3 as EOSL mostly no longer renewable from Huawei — TPM is the only option here.
Can you also service older OceanStor 18500 and 18800 V3?
Yes, this is a central focus area. OceanStor 18500 V3 and 18800 V3 (released 2014–2016, EOSL reached) are still productive in many DACH banks, telecommunications data centers and research environments — these high-end hybrid platforms were purchased for tier-1 workloads and have been running stably for 8–10 years. We stock controller modules, disks (FC/SAS/SSD), cache modules, power supplies and backplanes. For this platform class TPM is often the only available maintenance option on the market — Huawei no longer renews and refresh would be a multi-million-euro project with elaborate data migration. With TPM you extend the productive lifecycle by another 5+ years at full serviceability.
How does maintenance of OceanProtect backup appliance work?
OceanProtect is Huawei's dedicated backup storage platform with integrated deduplication and replication. We service the hardware layer analogous to OceanStor — controllers, disks, cache and power supplies. Huawei's backup software license runs independently of hardware maintenance; subscriptions are managed directly with Huawei. For stable backup fleets software updates are typically uncritical — we document firmware and software status at contract conclusion and advise on critical updates in quarterly review. For combined fleets of OceanStor primary storage and OceanProtect backup we recommend a unified TPM contract with the same SLA level.
Does DeviceManager continue to work under TPM?
Yes. Huawei DeviceManager (eService) is the central storage management console for OceanStor platforms and runs license-free under TPM — storage provisioning, snapshot management, replication configuration, performance monitoring and hardware health status remain fully available. Firmware updates from the Huawei support portal require an active Huawei contract. For stable storage fleets with productive workloads firmware updates are typically uncritical — we document firmware status at contract conclusion and advise on critical security updates in quarterly review. For critical bugs or security issues we handle firmware procurement or equivalent updates.
Which SLA levels do you recommend for OceanStor?
For tier-1 workloads (banking databases, telecommunications billing, research HPC storage) generally 24×7×4 with German-speaking onsite engineer as standard — storage outage with these workloads means direct business impact. For secondary storage pools, test/dev environments or backup storage without immediate business criticality 5×9 NBD often suffices. For OceanStor 18000 class as high-end platform we generally recommend 24×7×4. For Dorado V6 in a high-availability configuration with active replication, 5×9 NBD may also be sufficient if failover is automatic. Mixed operation within the same contract is possible.
When is the natural entry point for TPM with OceanStor?
Factory warranty expiration is the typical entry. Huawei factory warranty for OceanStor typically runs 3 years, then Premier Support becomes due — particularly expensive for storage in the European market because OceanStor is generally purchased for high-value workloads and Huawei applies premium tariffs accordingly. Specifically: Dorado V3 fleets from 2018–2019 have been out of factory warranty since 2021–2022. Dorado V6 generation from 2021+ is currently expiring or becomes relevant in 2024–2027. OceanStor 5000/6000 mid-range V5 from 2019–2020 also relevant. We recommend: inventory check 6 months before factory warranty expiration, TPM contract from day 1 after warranty end without gap. For EOSL generations the switch to TPM is often worthwhile immediately because Huawei does not offer Premier Support there or only at significantly increased tariffs.
Can we have OceanStor with FusionServer and CloudEngine in the same contract?
Yes. Multi-line contracts across all Huawei product areas are our standard configuration for DACH fleets — OceanStor storage (Dorado, 5000 series, 18000 series, OceanProtect) plus FusionServer compute plus CloudEngine switching (CE data center, S campus) in one contract, one point of contact, one SLA report set. Plus all other vendors (HPE, Dell EMC, NetApp, Pure Storage) in the same construct. Consolidation savings just from eliminating parallel minimum spends typically 30–50 percent on top of per-system savings.
How fast do we get a quote?
Within 48 hours after receipt of your inventory list with model, configuration, factory warranty status and serial number.
