EXTREME ERS 8000 MAINTENANCE · TPM FOR ETHERNET ROUTING SWITCH (NORTEL HERITAGE)

Extreme ERS 8000 Maintenance — vendor-independent service for ERS 8600/8800/8806/8810 after EOSL

We service Extreme ERS 8000 series core switches after Extreme Networks Support expiration — ERS 8600, ERS 8800, ERS 8806 and ERS 8810. ERS 8000 platform comes from Nortel heritage (Nortel Passport 8600, later Avaya, then Extreme after 2017 Avaya acquisition).

Which ERS 8000 models we service

ERS 8000 is a modular core switching platform with 6-/10-slot chassis (ERS 8606/8610 older gen, ERS 8806/8810 modern). ERS 8600 = Nortel Passport 8600 (same hardware, brand lineage Nortel → Avaya → Extreme).

ERS 8600 / Passport 8600 (oldest generation)
ERS 8606 (6-slot) · ERS 8610 (10-slot) · Passport 8600 (original Nortel) · 8692SF (switch fabric)
ERS 8800 (mid-generation, Avaya branding)
ERS 8806 (6-slot) · ERS 8810 (10-slot) · 8895SF (higher backplane capacity)
Line cards (ports)
8612XLRS (12-port 10G XFP) · 8634XGRS (34-port 10G SFP+) · 8648GTR (48-port GbE) · 8624GTS · 8848GBE
CP and SF modules
CP-Plus · CP-2 · 8692SF / 8895SF (switch fabric) · 8004AC/DC PSUs
Transceivers
10GBase-LR/LRM/SR XFP · 10GBase-LR/SR SFP+ · 1000Base-LX/SX/T SFP · CWDM tunable

Why TPM maintenance for ERS 8000 instead of Extreme Networks Support

ERS 8000 has a complex brand lineage: Nortel acquired by Avaya 2009, then Extreme acquired Avaya networking 2017. With strategic push on Extreme VSP (8000/9000), ERS 8000 is in legacy support mode.

We stock ERS 8606/8610 and ERS 8806/8810 chassis components: 10GbE line cards (8612XLRS, 8634XGRS), GbE line cards (8648GTR, 8624GTS, 8848GBE), CP-Plus and CP-2, switch fabric (8692SF, 8895SF), PSUs (8004AC/DC), fan trays.

Multi-vendor contract

One contract for Extreme ERS 8000 and all other switch vendors.

VSP/ERS OS stays functional

VSP/ERS OS (VSP 7.x, ERS 7.x) stays fully functional. SPB FabricAttach, VLACP, Distributed-MLT, OSPF, BGP4, PIM-SM and QoS continue unchanged.

VSP migration consulting

Migration consulting to Extreme VSP 8000/9000 or VSP 7400 included. SPB FabricAttach config is portable between ERS 8000 and VSP — clean migration path.

FAQ on Extreme ERS 8000 maintenance

Which ERS 8000 models do you service?
Complete ERS 8000 series incl. Nortel heritage: Passport 8600, ERS 8606/8610 (Passport gen), ERS 8806/8810 (Avaya gen). Line cards (10GbE/GbE), CP-Plus/CP-2, switch fabric 8692SF/8895SF, PSUs, fan trays, transceivers.
What does TPM cost vs. Extreme Support?
An ERS 8810 with 6× 10GbE line cards + 24×7×4 costs 18,000-28,000 EUR/year at Extreme, 8,000-12,000 EUR at TechCare. ERS 8606/Passport 8600 (EOSL): TPM only at 4,500-7,000 EUR/year.
Do SPB FabricAttach and VOSS stay functional?
Yes. VOSS (VSP 7.x, ERS 7.x) stays fully functional. SPB FabricAttach (IEEE 802.1aq), VLACP, Distributed-MLT, IS-IS with SPB extensions, OSPF, BGP4, PIM-SM continue unchanged.
Can we upgrade CP-Plus to CP-2 during TPM?
Yes. CP-Plus → CP-2 upgrade is a typical maintenance path. CP-2 has more memory and higher performance — extends platform lifespan 3-5 years. We stock CP-2 modules.
Can we migrate to Extreme VSP during TPM?
Yes. Extreme VSP 8000/9000 is direct ERS 8000 successor. SPB FabricAttach configs are portable — clean migration path. TPM bridges 12-24 months. Alternatives: Cisco Nexus 9000 or Juniper QFX/EX.
Are there spare risks for old 8612XLRS line cards?
8612XLRS (12-port 10G XFP) is an older line card, often in DACH install bases. We stock 8612XLRS + newer 8634XGRS as migration option. XFP transceivers can be scarce — verified per site before contract.
Do we lose the warranty?
No. Factory warranty and Extreme Networks Support are contractual services.
