Why Lenovo maintenance via TechCare instead of Lenovo Premier Support

Lenovo's data center business is a mix of two worlds: the ThinkSystem family from Lenovo's own engineering and the inherited IBM System x portfolio (acquired 2014). Many DACH mid-market customers have x3550 M3 to M5 or x3650 in production, alongside newer ThinkSystem SR530/SR650. Plus ThinkAgile HCI platforms with Nutanix, VMware or Microsoft.

We know both worlds — XClarity Controller (Lenovo) and IMM (IBM heritage), DDR3 and DDR4 RAM, ServeRAID controllers, fans and PSUs for x3550 M3 to ThinkSystem SR950. For ThinkAgile HCI the split is clean: we handle hardware maintenance, Nutanix AOS subscription or VMware licenses run separately. On IBM System x the savings are particularly high: 50 to 70 percent vs. Lenovo Premier Support.

Compute-specific TPM topics: BMC/iLO/iDRAC firmware updates without OEM subscription, DIMM failure diagnostics (the most common server defect after PSU), and BIOS CPU microcode patches for Spectre-/Meltdown-class vulnerabilities — also post-EoSL via mirror repositories.

FAQ on Lenovo maintenance

Do you service the old IBM System x — x3550, x3650, x3850?
Yes, this is one of our focus areas. Lenovo took over IBM's x86 business in 2014, the x3550 M3/M4/M5 and x3650 M3/M4/M5 are still productive in many DACH data centers. x3850 X5/X6 and x3950 X6 too. We stock DDR3 RAM, ServeRAID controllers, BMC modules, fans and PSUs and know the quirks of these machines.
What about ThinkAgile HX and Nutanix software?
We service the hardware layer (server components of HX models: CPU, RAM, disks, NICs, boot drives, PSUs). Nutanix AOS subscription runs separately via Nutanix or Lenovo — we don't touch that. For hardware defects we come, for Nutanix software topics your Nutanix contract relationship. The split is clean and proven in practice.
What does TPM cost compared to Lenovo Premier Support?
For current ThinkSystem under active Premier Support, switching usually pays off after factory warranty. For IBM System x and EOSL ThinkSystem we see 40 to 70 percent savings. An x3650 M5 with 24×7×4 contract costs 1,700 to 2,300 EUR/year with Lenovo, 600 to 1,000 EUR with TechCare.
Do XClarity, IMM and ThinkAgile tools still work?
XClarity Controller (Lenovo) and IMM (IBM heritage) are hardware components and remain fully usable. XClarity Administrator as software license continues. Firmware updates remain freely accessible via Lenovo support portal, even without active Premier Support.
Do you service ThinkSystem DM/DE/DG storage?
Yes. The ThinkSystem storage family (DM3000H to DM7100F, DE2000H to DE6000H/F, DG series) is OEM-based on NetApp ONTAP or NetApp E-Series — we know the hardware. Maintenance covers the hardware layer, ONTAP software subscription runs separately.
Can you also service older ThinkServer (RD series)?
Yes. ThinkServer RD350, RD450, RD550, RD650, RD850 and TD350 are the predecessor generation to ThinkSystem — released 2014/2015, partially EOSL by now. We stock parts and service these models fully.
